My Grandma (Nannie) used to make some sort of colored crystals grow in a pie pan.  I know she used charcoal briquettes as the base & poured some sort of concoction on top.  I think ammonia was one ingredient cause I remember the smell but could be wrong..it's been a few years, she died in 1971.  Stuff would grow in different colors on the charcoal, sort of like cauliflower.  Has anyone else done this? Is there a name for such a thing??  I know the memory isn't a result of growing up in the 60's!!  Jody

Oh JP, you are sure full of yourself today!! And yes, she was my favorite...come to think of it, she may have needed something to put up w/us kids all summer!
JM, YES!  I think the recipe is there, sounds so familiar although all I remember is the charcoal & ammonia.  Gonna try it soon! Thanks!!  Jody
