Where are all of the people who stayed behind in Galveston, TX

Before hurricane Ike hit Galveston, the news media made a big deal abut how 10% of the population stayed behind. Now, we're hearing that about 2000 people were rescued. Where are the other 6,000-10,000? Where are the people who 'rode out' the storm? Dead?
I have not heard anything about this...

some left last minute. many left after. some may have been swept out to sea. they gone door to door of the homes left to look for people and bodies. last i heard, Galveston has been pretty well checked over and cleared out. no power and no resources forced most to leave after the storm if they survived.
as for those who may have been washed away, we may never know of some of them. others will come to light as families start to search for them.
