I have the total gym - it ended up with the rest of the workout furniture in the room of good intentions.  I did pull it out after having spine surgery as my physical therapist used it for some of the exercises he wanted me to do.  Other than that it takes up a lot of room and it takes a master of tinkertoys to reconfigure it between exercises.  Ole Chucky never shows you that; itís done for him between camera cuts.

I spent 20 years in the military and after 10 years of retirement have gotten fat, out of shape, and gotten the heart attack waiting to happen speech from the Doctor.  As of the first of the year we decided to change our lives and did.  Since then Iíve dropped 35 pounds, my wife 25 pounds.  Blood pressure from 165/105 to 111/65, and cholesterol from 271 to 168.  Iíve never felt better.  How did I do it?Huh??    Very simple two step method;

Eat Less Ė Sounds simple and it is.  Instead of eating the 12 or 16 ounce steak, eat the 8 ounce steak.  Want ice cream?  Eat one ice cream bar instead of a bowl of it Ė youíll eat less.  Pay attention to what you eat and eat smarter. Did you know you could eat 5 oranges to one snickers bar?  Pay attention to your caloric intake.  Want that snack?  Sure but snack smart.  You can still be members of the clean plate club; just get smaller plates and donít fill them to max capacity.  After a while your stomach adjusts and you fill up much faster.

Exercise Ė Sounds simple but it isnít.  This is where discipline takes over.  You donít need any fancy machines, just the dedication to get off your butt and do it.  I bought the slim in six DVD to help us with a rounded workout routine.  I didnít expect to do anything in six weeks so we took it a bit slower.  My 50 year old body isnít the same as it was at 25, which is what I suspect the instructor is. Due to our schedule, I ended up exercising 4 times a week Mon. Tues. Thurs. and Fri.  Any structured workout tape will work, even Richard Simmons, but you need to commit to using it.

On the up side Ė we feel great.  Weíve saved quite a bit of money in groceries.
On the downside Ė Clothes keep getting looser; without a belt my trousers wonít stay up. grin

Hey FC, appreciate the feedback.

I just got finished 30 minutes on the minnie trampoline, its starting to become habit again! I'm feeling better and am getting around a lot better, my energy level is up and I feel good mentally, that I'm doing what's right.

I'm not getting any younger so it was time to get with it and change my bad habits to good ones.

Really enjoying my meals also, late yesterday I had some suishi with a small amount of egg and vegetables with a bean sprout salad with a sesamee dressing.

Been drinking lots of water, fresh carrot juice and young coconut juice, 86ed the soft drinks all together. Don't have any cravings any more and I believe its cause I gave up sugar.

Have a healthy day!

So its been just about 3 weeks since I started eating better and now I am excersising, just kinda started with that but I'm really starting to see the affects of this new direction.

My diet for the last 3 weeks has been devoid of fatty meats which was a big part of my diet before.

As you know I have been eating lots of vegetables and salads and started drinking some fresh fruit smoothies. Haven't had a soft drink either.

Last night I had a few turkey burgers, in case anyone hasn't tried them they're lean, cook fast and full of protein.

Hi everyone.

I am posting from the Florida Keyes at this unbelievable resort called Checca Lodge and Spa. We have been here for 3 days and leave tomorrow for Miami Beach.

Well, the place is very secluded and they have 3 restaurants where everyone seems to eat. But we were very dissappointed that they could hardly come up with anything for vegetarians. So we have been driving down about 1/2 hour away to a Winn Dixie supermarket and purchasing stuff to place into our little hotel refrigerator and making sandwiches and salads etc.

I am eating very badly since we are really picking, picking all day long and not eating to fill up. I weighed myself yesterday on a scale that they have in the fitness center and I cannot even believe it.

I am going to have to take this more seriously when I get back home and try to do something.

Just an update on what is going on with me. Other than this eating dilemna, we are having a great time. Went snoorkling for the first time in my life yesterday and that was great.

By the way, JP glad to hear about the exercising. I know for a fact that exercise has to become part of ones life especially as we age everything stiffens up. Happy for your progress.

Take care

Quick update, haven't weighed myself but Mom and brother say I look like I lost twenty lbs. Getting around a lot better, feeling better too.

No soft drinks, added sugar, lowfat, major increase in vegetables and fruit, limited amount of lean meats, seafood, eggs, some dairy, some excersise, lots of water, quality of life getting better.

Okay here are a few more "don'ts"

any carbonated drink, even water

no fried foods

no splenda or nutrasweet

Here are some do's

For sweetening:

stevia

xylitol

brown rice syrup

Hey Sharon, what's bad about splenda? I can't stand the stuff myself but my wife likes it. I know apartame is bad stuff, and some people have trouble losing weight when consuming aspartame, at least according to the atkin's people.

Please fill me in so I can tell my wife. Thanks!

It does different things to different people. I know for me it made me crave more sugar, just like real sugar does.  Also causes/accelerates inflammation in the body so if you have arthritis or any other inflammatory problems it makes em worse.  Headaches & triggers migraines..can't remember what else but it's a ton! Others more knowledgable (or with a better memory) will chime in I'm sure.  Look it up on the internet, much info & many studies...Have a GREAT Fathers Day!!!!  Jody

Thanks for the feedback Jody.

I did some searching but nothing seems really conclusive regarding splenda, seems the worst side affects are bloating and diarrhea. Tastes nasty to me though.

Appreciate any input about your experiences and negative facts that you know about splenda, thanks.

I like this thread!

My wife and I started to eat healthier before we moved back to GA. We would eat cereal with yogurt and fruit for breakfast (which was a HUGE change from the cheesy scrambled eggs, sausage and what not).

We really wanted to change how much high fructose corn syrup we were putting in our bodies. I cut out drinking soda thinking that was the major source. What an eye opener when I started to look at ingredients while shopping. Even a lot of breads with the "natural grain goodness" labels have the stuff in them.

The biggest change that my wife took that I just couldn't was going on a beaks or fins diet as far as meats. She cut out everything except fish and chicken / turkey. That was a killing blow for me being a proud carnivore. I went with her on cutting out beef and lamb, but I just could not give up my BBQ pork.

Then we got pregnant with our second child and all that went out the window for a few months we both gained a few pounds lol.

Trying to get back into that healthy mode of eating, which we have done with breakfast for the most part. Back to cereal and oat meal routine.

I tried to give up sweetener in my tea, but got back on the band wagon of sweet tea. Gonna give it another shot once we run out of this latest round of sweeteners  Smiley

Me: Hey, any of the sweetners that give something back are ok in moderation, such as honey and my favorite is agave lite cactus syrup because it mixes well, even in cold beverages. I get it from Whole Foods. A little goes a long way.

I was losing weight till you started getting healthy on me! angry
I think I'm putting on what youre taking off...I went from almost 270 down to 240,.....Now I'm pushing 248-250..... I wanted to get down to at least 235 so I could really start the war on weight!
Bad thing is, is i know why I'm putting weight back on..I'm eating more than i'm burning.
I'm also sitting on my butt more since its become so hot(And its not even 120 out yet!)

As for me, aspartame gives me a headache and leaves a bad taste in my mouth tongue

Keep up the good work!

Eating in moderation:  I went from 260 to 210 in 5 months by eating what I wanted to, just less of it.  One good side affect was that I was able to shelve the CPAP machine.  Another was reducing my diabetes meds to just 1 and keeping blood sugars down at the same time.  3rd thing was lowered blood pressure.

I still eat what I want, when I want, just eat less per sitting, instead of a whole Rhubard-Gooseberry pie I limit myself to 1 slice.  Single helpings helps a lot too.

Rhubarb-Gooseberry pie, can't say I've ever tried anything quite like that, can you describe it Brian?

Hey, I just had a bowl of fordhook lima beans with olive oil, seasoning, avocado and bragg's lquid amono acids. I figured I would try this product, and it actually added quite a nice flavor to the concoction.

Do you need to refrigerate the stuff?

Still losing some weight, but the gut is always the last to go. I wake up and its not sticking out as much, but by the end of the day its done stuck out again! grin

Brian is right, it is the table and not the gym that is the key to losing weight. I can work out like a demon and not lose weight if I am taking in too many calories (especially in carbohydrate). The working out is really to charnge the way our bodies look (i.e to build muscles) and to increase our base metabolic rate (BMR).  The working out increases the rate at which our bodies burn fuel which includes both dietary fuel (what we eat) and stored fuel (what we ate before and have now stored as fat). The working out also gives us cardivascular changes that we otherwise would not enjoy.  These include dilated arteries, better circulation and decreased blood pressure. Eat small meals relatively frequently, and you will lose weight.  Combine it with exercise, and you will look different faster, feel better, live longer and lose weight faster. If you love a food; eat it.  Just eat it in extreme moderation if it is high in sugar, fat and calories.  This is about being healthy not being punished for past sins.

Annette, I love my limas and I mixed some bragg's with lemon juice and olive oil and some low sodium seasoning and it was terrific, the bragg's has a very agreeable taste to me and a little goes a long way, it seems.

My wife and I went to a golden corral on Monday and I watched my portions, had mainly a salad and vegetables a small portion of baked fish and a small piece of rare ribeye. The old me would have had at least 4 plates!   shocked
