OK, Annette here now.

Finally, finally, got the darn Comcast service back. This is a really good topic and I thank you JP for posting this. Actually this is something I am battling at the moment also having gained a good 8 lbs all in my stomach. In fact my goal is to lost about 20 lbs this summer. I am feeling disgusted and depressed about this wt gain. I am not a small woman to begin with, but at least the lbs were in the right place before.

Now I am a vegetarian and I eat really well. But I can overdo it with the pasta and breads.  Even eating whole foods a person can gain wt if you overeat. I gained this wt because I got totally out of control with how I was eating. I could not stuff it in fast enough. Stress and not being relaxed cause me to overeat. So although I think it is very important to eat the right foods, I think it is more important to eat in a relaxed and unhurried manner.

I think it is important to try to begin each meal with a simple prayer of gratitude for having the food to eat, (this has nothing to do with any religion, just gratitude to the universe or whatever you like) as this can get you in the right state of mind to slow down. I think it is very important to eat slowly and actually taste the food. Also there is less chance of overeating if you eat slowly, because then you can listen to the message you are getting that you are actually filled up and it is time to stop.

I also think it is very, very important not to eat late in the evening and actually best to have sort of an empty stomach in the evening. Never, never go to bed on a full stomach. Ever see Sumo wrestlers?? They bulk them up by gorging them on food and making them go to sleep. It all turns to fat then.

Well, this is my 2 cents and if I could actually listen to my own advice, I would be in great shape. But this has worked for me in the past also.

Take Care and Good Luck

Annette, I'm glad you stopped in. You know, part of the reason, ok, a big part of why I posted this topic was a selfish one, but that's not always a bad thing, now is it? Some people think the word "selfish' is an inherently bad word, but we have to admit, sometimes we can and need to be more selfish, giving to ourselves.

So, I had this thought that we could all talk about eating better, planning better, making better choices, and in the mean time, use our fellow forum friends to lean on if you will, as motivation to do better.

Plus, when things are in the open, we now are accountable. So, I have pulled you all into my world, to use you, my fellow forum friends, to better myself. You have been my puppets!!!!! grin grin grin You do realize I'm being extremely sarcastic right? Wink

But...

I would like to thank all of you for participating and just to let you know, I have been eating better and feeling better, and I hope we can all do the same!

The benefits so far: I can see my feet again! I have more energy! I wake up earlier, because I go to bed earlier. My diet needs are being met and I am plain feeling better, even happier.

In a nutshell, the thing to do is to "eat to live" and not "live to eat"
right now though, I look forward to my meals and am in the first category still, but we all have our vices, so living to eat, if its healthy for ya, is a vice I don't mind harboring, I'll pass on the crack, thank you.

Things I've been eating: fresh carrot juice, lots of salads (mixed greens, tomatoes, red onion, feta cheese, cucumbers, etc... ginger dressing is my fav)  have layed off the fatty meats considerably, boca burgers, dressed, had a veggie burrito last nite, usually oatmeal for breakfast, with agave syrup or honey, sometimes with pollen.

I keep mixed nuts with me and some healthy bars.

Drinking: young coconut juice, water w/ lemon, lime soda w/ kombucha w/agave syrup, and some fruit flavored non-carbonated beverages.

Tonite I will have a broiled chuck eye round steak with brussel sprouts and fresh carrot juice, I make myself.

Did I say I'm a freak for fordhook lima beans? Well I am. grin

Sharon: "Lima beans??  hhhhmmm I am not sure I like those...maybe I do, I will have to try them..."

Me: I buy frozen in the bag, cook them down until soft, can be pierced with a fork. I make a concoction of veggit, veg oil, small bit of vinegar(I like cidar) and some seasoning and add this in with the limas.

So good you'll wanna slap ya momma at least once! grin

JP

You are eating better than me right now and I am proud of you. What a fabulous diet you have. It sounds so,so good. I have a friend in Hawaii who swears by Coconut Oil and says it burns up fat like you would not believe. Better than Olive Oil. I am going to buy some and try it, but I think it is very expensive if just bought off the shelf. He has an internet site he purchases from.

What can I say, fruits, vegetables, nuts, all good. I have recently given up diet-pepsi and regular pepsi. Do not want the aspartame (sp?) or the corn syrup in the pepsi. Recently read about the aspartame being a poison and causing symptoms like MS, and wondering if this could be a cause of all my aches and pains in my legs. The coconut juice is so,so healthy.

JP have you ever tried "Bragg all natural ginger and sesame dressing"? So good!! But not made to pour on - just a little.(calories)

Have a great day = going up to visit the bees now before it gets to hot.

Love

Me: Annette, I don't recall seeing the bragg's brand but I'll look for it. Apartame gives some people bad headaches and some say people trying to lose weight have trouble because of apartame.

As far as the coconut drink, its by Amy & Brian, its young coconut juice, isotonic whatever that means and is low in sugar. Not to be confused with coconut milk, this drink is lite and mildly sweet. Its a lil pricey @ $1.79 a pop but I spread it out.

Table sugar in my opinion is addictive. In fact studies have been done that indicate you eat more and crave more when consuming a diet with table sugar. I know for myself I am a mess when my blood sugar is outta whack, and too many carbs and sugar will do this to the blood.

Hey Annette, let's eat healthier!! We owe it to ourselves. Wink

Ok, for those who have never tried soybeans. I just had some, not my first time won't be the last. Actually been eatin' 'em for yrs.

Here's my simple recipe. Start with shelled frozen soybeans, in pot of water add powdered crab boil, bring to a boil for 5 minutes. Let sit for 10-12 minutes to soak up flavor.

Enjoy!!!

High in protein, tastes good, and a good pick you up. I keep some with me in the truck, ready to go.

Wife loves them, so do the three fur children!

Annette

Yeah, my wife hates me already, she says I've already lost weight and that, this is just not fair! You know us guys can lose weight pretty fast.

Annette, I meant to tell you. I like your idea of giving thanks before a meal, you're so right about having your head straight before you eat.

Food can be dangerous!!! grin

Eating healthy foods is a big part of it. So is portion control and eating slowly.

When my weight goes up, I make an effort pay attention to my meals more, to eat slower and eat less. My goal is to never stuff myself. When I do this consistently, I lose 2-8 pounds per month.  The best thing is no hunger and more enjoyment of the foods I do eat.

Good luck with your move to greater health.

You got it right Vetch. Yrs ago I read a book called Fit For Life by Marilyn & Harvey Diamond. I remember that one entire page says the words Do Not Over Eat! over & over again. They were def trying to make that point.
