In the Speedy Bee June 2004 there is a report about the Kasmir Virus in British Columbia. This is a deadly virus which will decimate entire bee yards. It can be transmitted by parasitic mitesand though it was benign in Canada for decades, it has suddenly become virulent and exceedingly destructive. This virus can remain dormant for several months before the bees begin to die.
This was in The Bee News newsletter of the Richmond beekeepers association November 2004 issue.
This sounds pretty bad.

Have you received the reports back from the state inspecter? Still interested in what he has to say. My bees are all but shut down here. The high next week is forcast around 43. I'm about 500 ft off the valley floor, so I'll be significantly cooler. Last time I was in them, the brood was a bit spotty, same as you reported. I didn't think much of it. It's been cold around these parts.
