Handles on Hive boxes
« on: March 29, 2008, 09:51:07 AM »
I won a Rossman cypress hive box at the spring meeting of the Georgia Beekeepers Association.  It is, of course, unassembled.  I notice that there are no hand hold cut outs on the sides of the box.  Should I put some kind of metal handle on the box?  I've only seen bee boxes with cut out hand holds so I am interested in what others would recommend.

It also assembles with solid corners (no dovetails) - I'm sure there's a construction name for that kind of construction.

Tillie,
The construction is a rabbeted joint.
You could put screws in to a piece of wood on the outside for handles.

You can put any kind of handle you like on them, even just a scrap of wood like Ken suggested.   The reason folks prefer the recessed hand holds is that it allows stacking on the boxes tightly together without handles interfering.

So luxurious to have a cypress hive - maybe I'll buy it special handles!
