We have three turkeys, (Richard, the tom, and two hens, unyet named).  What a day.  My Husband and I have been working long hours readying an old horse box stall to house the turkeys and their prospective progeny.  The turkey hens have been performing some unusual antics lately.  I am new to turkeys this year, so all this is wonderous to my eyes.  The hens have been rather fluffy looking, they spend hours preening themselves. I think they are getting ready to show off to Richard.  He has had his eyeballs on them ever since they came here, about 2 weeks ago.  He has been buffing around, all fluffed up almost continuously, showing them how beautiful he really is, and yes, he, being that Bronze Heritage tom is a sight for the eyes.  If I had ever known how wonderous and lovely turkeys are, I would have had them as part of my flock long ago, they are amazing and beautiful creatures, I kid you not.

Yesterday when we were working out in the chickenyard, my Husband called me over, quietly and told me to watch.  There was a mating ritual going on with Richard and one of the hens, now that was something else to behold.  The event was probably about 10 minutes long, not like those honky roosters that are on and off within seconds, funny thing.  Drakes take a long time too, our Muscovy drake loves his girls as well.

So Richard and the hen moved around in a circle for a minute.  And then she kind of squatted down a little bit.  He got on top of her and stood on her back.  I mean stood on her.  Straight up and then it looked almost like he was kneading her, like one kneads bread.  He kept standing on her for about a minute, pushing her down and then the act began.  It was quite a site, like I was saying.  The act itself was very short and then he got off and she fluffed up and walked away.

That wasn't the end of it.  This courting, I guess it is called that, carried on for at least another 10 minutes.  The copulation had been complete, but the antics continued on for some time.  And the other hen came over to see what was up, she fluffed up even more too, but I guess his interests were satisfied for the time being.

The mated hen began to display herself just the same as Richard has been for a long time.  I didn't realize that hens looked just like the toms when they are all in full display.  She looked almost identical to him.  Her feathers were all fluffed up, her tail fanned, her wing feathers dragging on the ground.  Maybe she is a male, hee, hee, sure does look like one.

I have only seen the hens all sleek looking, I didn't know that their tail feathers can make that fan, just like the tom.  YOu will see in the pictures what I mean.  What a beautiful day on the farm, and the sun shinin' made it even better.  Enjoy the pictures, those you who have turkeys will know what I mean about the beautiful of these fowl.  Beautiful day, beautiful life, beautiful in all that is beautiful.  Cindi

Ann, oh, oh, sometimes I don't quite know how to take people's comments, maybe I am too sensitive.  Was my post a little off colour?  I see smilies at the end of the sentence, but was my story too graphic?  I truly apologize from the bottom of my heart if I have offended anyone at all, I need clarification if this stuff was too graphic or not, pleeeeeze......Have a wonderful, beautiful and awesomely great day, Cindi

Did either of them ask for a cigerette afterward?

My wife is mad at me again.  I went to the feed store and returned with 2 rabbits, 3 turkey pults, and 6 Austrolop chicks.  The last they had of each.  But hey, it is through the animals as the way I'm finding that I can connect with my grandkids.  Each one wants to help grandpa feed his animals and he teaches them about how to feed them, what the critters do (and what they are doing), etc.  They even fight over who gets to help grandpa train his pigeons for the races starting mid-April.
